This paper is a review of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment. We summarize the CAST experimental results, give highlights of the history of CAST and discuss its evolution into various different probes in the dark sector with a timeline. The results, achievements and challenges throughout the lifetime of CAST are presented.
