Abstract
The detection of gravitational waves from the mergers of binary black holes and binary neutron stars has opened a new observational window in astronomy. This paper presents a review of the events detected during the first runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo and their impact on
astrophysics and cosmology.
